'Madeleine was kidnapped on May 3rd 2007 by a DVD pedophile ring operating out of Toledo, Spain, with links to another ring in Madrid. She had been photographed by a DVD spotter on the beach at Sagres, Portugal and selected for sexual abuse and murder (in a snuff movie) from a group of three photos emailed to the private email account of a senior official of the European Commission.
MI6 smelt a rat straight away and the Head of Station Lisbon went down to the Algarve in a tearing hurry. Six of course had access to both emails (from Portugal to Brussels and then from the ring in Brussels to the official they were compromising), which had been intercepted by the very professional National Security Agency at their RAF Menwith Hill listening post and copied to GCHQ under the usual Five Eyes arrangements.
The Defence Signals Directorate in Canberra were of course copied in. Mike Burgess at the time was a senior DSD officer.
Six were warned off by the Cabinet Office, who were frantic about the possible adverse impact on popular support for EU membership of it becoming known that a British toddler had been selected for sexual abuse and murder by a Commission official in Brussels in exchange for political favors. The operation was handed over to me, deniably of course.
At the time I was one of precious few civilians in the UK who could ring up the NSA on an encrypted line and ask for a briefing on suspicious air and sea movements out of the Algarve...

"The trial of Madeleine McCann murder suspect, identified as Christian B. in line with Germany's privacy laws, opened in Germany on Friday with the 47-year-old accused of unrelated sex crimes.
However, the trial was almost immediately postponed until next Friday after an allegation of bias against a judge involved in the proceedings.
What we THINK we know about the case
While German prosecutors have yet to charge B. over the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine, he was charged in October 2022 with five separate counts of rape and child sex abuse, allegedly committed between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal.
Before the indictment was read out, B.'s defense filed a motion for bias against a female lay judge.
The defense said there were doubts about the woman's suitability, claiming she previously called for the killing of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in an online post.
In addition, the lawyers said, the woman works as a child psychotherapist and advocates for the interests of children, creating a "procedural reference" that raised doubts about her neutrality.
It is understood that no witnesses had been summoned for the first day of the trial. Defense lawyer Friedrich Fülscher has asserted his client's innocence, saying he would seek acquittal on the charges.
B. is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany after being found guilty of committing a rape in Portugal in 2005..."
